How did you come out to your parents?
I was fourteen and I had my first official girlfriend. My ex-boyfriend was threatening to tell my mom himself if I didn't tell her by the end of the night. I figured my dad would take it better, so I decided he'd be the first to know. After dinner, I called him to my room and told him straight up.
What did you say?
All I said at first was "Dad, I'm gay." He sat on my bed and started asking me every question in the book. Eventually, he told me that he felt I was too young to make such a big decision for myself, but if I still felt that way when I was seventeen or eighteen, he'd still love me. Before he left, I asked him not to tell my mom. However, he still did.
The next day when my mom picked me up from school, it all started. On the way home, she was yelling at me and telling me a lot of mean things. As we got home, she told me she didn't want me to be her daughter anymore. When I started crying, she told me that I should've expected it.
Then, she followed me to my room and kept yelling. My dad got home and rescued me. She didn't talk to me for two weeks after that, though.
I'm sixteen now, and things have gotten a lot better. My dad will joke about it every once in a while, but he still doesn't accept it. My mom, though, actually just gave me stuff about it last night. I guess we just gotta stick together and deal with it, huh?:)
Advice
- The only thing I can say is to make sure you know that's what you are before you decide to put any labels to anything.
- And of course, the cliché "make sure you have a support system in case something happens". Good luck. :)
