How did you come out to your parents?
My mom figured it by herself!
What did you say?
I came out in middle school when I was in the 8th grade. This girl that I liked asked me out so of course I said yes. It wasn't the best relationship I've had, but being my first relationship with a girl, I became obsessed with her basically. I tried my best to hide it; I called her "my best friend" when I was talking about her to my mom. One day it was just me and my mom driving down the road, and she asked me," Your a lesbian aren't you?" I was shocked. I mean how could she have known this? I just sat there with my mouth open in awe. She laughed, which I thought was odd, because she was a religious person I thought when this would come up she would disown me. She began to recount my childhood, having girl crushes, playing with the boys, acting a lot like a boy, dressing in boy clothes, she just didn't know how to break the ice. She was probably one of the coolest parents when it came to this. She was always putting gay people down, but when she admitted that her own daughter was a lesbian, she embraced the idea. I guess this is one of the better "coming out of the closet" stories.
Advice
- Let your parents figure it out on their own, just help them a little bit own the way
- Try not to force the subject on your parents
- Don't be scared, their reaction may be totally different than what you expected.
