My Mom Read my Texts and Found Out

How did you come out to your parents?

I am sixteen years old and I was "outed." My mother went through my phone, while I was in the shower and she read a loving text that I sent to my girlfriend. My girlfriend has been to my house before, slept over, everything. My parents felt incredibly betrayed. My original plan was to tell them once I graduated high school and moved away from home. However, my plan was obviously ruined.

What did you say?

I told them that I lied to protect myself because I wasn't ready to tell them. I told them that I never disrespected their house and that I'm still the same person they have raised me to be. I told them that I want them to accept my girlfriend because she is still the kind young girl they have grown to love.

I wrote this all in a letter- I received no feedback. I'm still in limbo and so are they.

Advice

  • My mother asked me what was going on between my girlfriend and I. I lied. I should have told her the truth then, but I wasn't ready.
  • If anyone is in my shoes, the best thing to do is tell your parents before they find out. It really is easier that way.
  • Now, my parents act as if nothing has happened, and I have not spent time with my girlfriend in two months.
