How did you come out to your parents?
Officially coming out to my parents just sort of happened for me. I had just been dumped by my first girlfriend, we had been together 4 years and were living together. I tried talking to her again before I left for work and of course ended with me in tears. It just so happened my parents were on their way somewhere coming through my town and stopped by unannounced. They'd never done that before. My mom came upstairs and saw me crying and was like what happened? What's wrong? I couldn't really lie to her face and by seeing me I think she just sort of got it and looked at me and said, "It's ok just tell me".
What did you say?
I told her my "roommate" and I had been dating for the last 4 years and that she just broke up with me. Luckily she just hugged me and told me it was ok. I think they already pretty much knew by then anyway. My poor dad stayed downstairs clueless the whole time but I'm sure my mom explained everything to him in the car. The next time I saw him I was still sort of a mess and all he said to me was, "Well, relationships can be hard". That was it! I was so proud of them for taking it so well. My mom later told me that she was most hurt that I didn't feel like I could come to her sooner than I did.
Advice
- The only thing I would have done differently is not waited so long. I distanced myself from my family for 4 years out of fear of them finding out and I can't get that time back with them. I can only do my best to make up for lost time now.
