Buster the Bunny and Lesbian Moms
Tuesday February 8, 2005
Last week, President Bush's new Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings denounced PBS for spending funds to create a segment of it's children's show, Postcards From Buster, who visits a lesbian-headed family in Vermont. I had the opportunity to watch the show. Our local station decided to air it at 4:30am, so parents could record it and "preview" it before deciding whether or not to show this "controversial" program to their children. Well, I did record and watch the show. It was so incredibly tame, I cannot imagine what the controversy is about. The word "lesbian" is never even mentioned. The show is really an educational program about maple sugar harvest in Vermont. Debra Chasnoff, producer of It's Elementary and One Wedding and a Revolution wrote an Op-Ed piece in the Washington Post. Registration is required, but it is well worth it to read her opinion.
