Guide Review - While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping is the beautiful tale of two women who find out the child they are waiting to adopt has been born. While the child sleeps, the women marvel at their fortune, marvel at the tiny baby they have received and marvel at life itself.

This is a short sweet tale that I can see any parent (gay or straight) reading to her newborn. I think the people that this book will really speak to is any parent with adoptive children.

Illustrator Kelli Bienvenu's bold colors and strong lines really pulls the story together. With whimsical cats and curious beagles in the background, she does a fine job of painting a realistic lesbian family.

Overall, Burks does an excellent job of conveying the joy new parents feel at the birth of their child. This book would make an excellent gift for any new gay or lesbian parent, or any parent who wants diversity to be part of their child's life.
