Lauren Lappin, Stanford University stand out and alternate for the 2004 Olympic Games credits teammate Vicky Galindo coming out as bisexual as giving her courage to come out. She said in an interview with The Advocate magazine, "She seemed very comfortable with her sexuality, which really inspired me to be less guarded and to share with my teammates things that I wouldn't hesitate to share if I was straight."
