Civil unions are allowed in two state: New Jersey and after June 2011 in Illinois. Civil unions allow all of the state level benefits of marriage to gay couples.Domestic Partnerships:
Some domestic partnership laws offer all the same state-wide rights as marriage. States with broad domestic partnership laws are: California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.Other states with domestic partnerships allow some, but not all of the benefits and responsibilities of marriage to same-sex couples. Those states are: Hawaii (reciprocal beneficiaries), Maine, Maryland, Colorado and Wisconsin.
