How did you come out to your parents?

While doing laundry at my Mom's house in my early 20's, I would always talk about my lesbian co-workers with excitement. My mom, who is not subtle in the slightest, asked me one night if I felt I was gay. I, defensive of course, immediately responded with "no way, I just have gay friends!"... Two days later, I went back to my moms house to tell her I had lied to her and that I was gay. She looked me in the eyes and said "Pumpkin-Seed, if this is who you are, and you are willing to travel down a very hard road full of mean and criticizing people, then be yourself... because mommy will always love you..."

What did you say?

I told my mom that I had to be true to myself, that I had been dating a woman for a couple months and that I had figured myself out and was finally proud of being me. I felt that there was a huge burdon lifted off my chest. I felt free and lighter than ever. I got in my car and headed up to my apartment where my girlfriend was waiting to ask how it went. That night, we slept in each other's arms realizing that, that day, made the biggest difference in my life and I would never forget it.

Advice

  • Wait until you are ready
  • Be true to yourself
  • Tell your best friend first and get advise if you don't think your parents will take it well
  • Find help if you need it
  • There are TONS of homosexuals who can not tell their parents, co-workers, or friends... find them through LGBTQI centers and get support that way
  • You do not have to suffer and you are not alone
  • We all know the struggle and there isn't one of us that would refuse to help!
