When They Found Out They Were Thrilled for Me

How did you come out to your parents?

I am 31 years old and in my first lesbian relationship. I had told my cousin, who works with my immediate family. I had been spending a lot of time at my girlfriend's house and have been very happy recently. I figured that eventually they would figure it out themselves, and save me the drama of having to tell them. I told my cousin, if cornered to tell my family the truth and try to smooth things over. Yeah, I know not the best approach at letting my family know. The point of my story is that when they found out, they were actually very thrilled for me, just wanting me to be happy, and realizing that I am.

What did you say?

I talked to my mom alone, shortly after she had her suspicions confirmed by my cousin. My cousin hadn't given her much detail, in fact she hadn't even said I was dating a woman, just that I was dating. My mom suspected it was one of my two female friends that I have been spending time with. So...out on to the back porch, where the first words out of mom's mouth are, "So which one is it?" I told her which friend I am in a relationship with, and she was very happy for me.

Advice

  • I don't agree that not telling my parents myself is the best approach for everyone, but it worked for me. It had become obvious to them, and they ended up asking questions. I figured they would be fine with it, but they are more than fine, in fact very open to it. My advice is just wait until the time seems right, and have faith that it will all fall into place.
